Tips On Writing A Resume For a Job
A resume can make or break job prospects, depending on the format and quality. There is a specific method to resume writing that everyone on job posting boards should learn about. Knowing this information can help people find and be considered for jobs easier.
First and foremost, pick a font that is easy to read. Times New Roman is always a safe choice, but there are other fonts that can give the resume a slightly different look without being unprofessional. Arial, Calibri, and Georgia are all great fonts that can still provide professionalism.
Do not use any paper that is a different color than white, off-white, or cream. Many people think that using neon green or purple paper for their resume will get them more attention. However, this will only make the candidate look unprofessional.
At the top of the resume, center the candidate’s name in 16 point font. Underneath the name, also centered, put the home address of the candidate and other pertinent contact information, such as an email address and a phone number. Make sure the email address is something professional, like the initials of the candidate’s name with underscores or numbers.
The first section depends on what experience the candidate has. If the candidate has an unimpressive educational history, then work experience needs to go at the top of the resume. If the candidate has had little work experience, or experience that is not relevant, then education needs to go at the top of the resume.
Education needs to go in the order of the most recent institution at the top. High school is usually not relevant to put on the list, unless the candidate is still in college trying to find a job. Certifications that are not degrees need to be included, such as a digital media or teaching certificate. There is certain information that needs to be included.
For example, each school should be a section listed under education. The first line of each section needs to be the full name of the institution followed by a comma and the city and state the school is located in.
The next line needs to list the degree earned at the institution. If there was a minor or other area of study, it needs to be listed on the next line. The next line needs to be the month and year the candidate graduated. The following line should be the average GPA for all semester attended. The last line needs to be any special accomplishments, like being on the Dean’s List.
For the work experience section, the same rule applies that the most recent place of work needs to be listed at the top. Each workplace needs to be its own section as well. The first line needs to list the title that candidate held at the job and the workplace. For example, the first line could read Sales Director at Sales, INC.
The next line needs to be the time period the candidate worked there. For example, this line could read July 2004-February 2007. After this, the candidate needs to have a bullet point list of all the skills and job requirements of the title.
These need to be written in a certain way. The candidate could write: led a sales team with high profit turnarounds. It could also read: produced quality content for social media sites under deadlines. The first word needs to be an engaging verb that shows experience and initiative.
From here, the resume has a few options. No matter what, the candidate needs to list the skills they have. Make sure the skills are relevant to the job position. The skills section should be the last part of the resume. Before that, candidates should list any volunteer experience and awards and achievements that they have.
